Provenance: Collection Viktor Martin-Malburet
Dorotheum, Vienna

The French space historian and art collector Victor Martin-Malburet collected vintage prints, including historical photographs from the US space agency NASA, for over 25 years. The color and black-and-white photographs were originally used for scientific purposes and were largely under lock and key.

Victor Martin-Malburet: "The astronauts are often portrayed as great scientists and heroes, but rarely are they recognized as some of the most important photographers of all time. The early pioneers of Mercury and Gemini were offered space and Earth as a canvas, the Apollo astronauts an alien world. From the thin protection of their space capsules and EMUs (Extravehicular Mobility Units), they took photographs with skill and daring that immediately took up the iconography of the sublime and evoked awe and wonder."

Parts of the Martin Malburet collection have already been exhibited in renowned museums around the world, including the Grand Palais in Paris, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg and the Louisiana Museum of Art in Denmark.
